Allamuchy Mountain State Park

Allamuchy Mountain State Park is a beautiful, 2,440 acre park located in Byram Township, New Jersey. It is situated along the Musconetcong River, which boasts some of the best trout fishing in the area. Beyond the natural beauty of Allamuchy Mountain State Park there is also the Waterloo Village, which reenacts some of the history of the area.

Trails and recreation

Many outdoor activities are offered at Allamuchy Mountain State Park. There are many trails, including 14 miles of marked trails and 20 miles of unmarked trails. Visitors can use these trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. There is also a three mile water trail for rowboats, canoes and kayaks, and several lakes within the park, including Cranberry Lake, Jefferson Lake, Allamuchy Pond and Deer Park Pond. Winter recreational activities include ice skating, ice fishing and cross country skiing.

Waterloo Village

Waterloo Village is a restored 19th century town located on the Morris Canal, a waterway that was used in the past for transportation between Jersey City and Phillipsburg, New Jersey. This town had an inn, blacksmith and general store, as well as a working watermill. Starting in the 1960s, Percival H.E. Leach and Lou Gualandi established a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the village, and many of the buildings have benefited from preservation efforts since that time. Unfortunately, since Gualandi's death there have been some issues surrounding the village and its hours of operation are limited.

Overall, Allamuchy Mountain State Park offers many different recreational activities, including hiking, horseback riding and fishing. Its scenic trails and beautiful lakes provide a great retreat from the busy world. Waterloo Village also offers family-friendly, educational fun. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, but Waterloo Village has variable hours, so make sure you check before making plans.
