Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park

The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park is one of central New Jersey's best recreational spots. Covering a wide expanse of land and water, the park offers several activities including canoeing, jogging, hiking, bicycling, fishing and horseback riding.
History
The canal was originally built as an industrial transport route between New York and Philadelphia when the United States entered the Industrial Revolution. The usage of the canal peaked during the 1860's and 70's when coal was transported through it to feed New York City's growing demand. After the 19th century the canal's use focused on supplying water rather than transportation. The area was finally made a state park in 1974. Many remnants of the park's history are still visible. The 19th century Prallsville Mills contain a sawmill, gristmill and linseed oil mill, and many functions are arranged there by the Delaware River Mill Society. Meanwhile, the Six Mile Run Reservoir Site in Somerset County still offers a glimpse into the lives of the first Dutch settlers who lived here in the 1700s.
Wildlife
The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park is also home to many species of wildlife. A recent study concluded that about 160 species of birds live in the park, with around 90 nesting there as well. Unique plant life is also visible around the "Natural Areas" trails.
Activities
The park provides a multitude of activities for picnicking, recreation and relaxation. Boating and fishing in the canal is permitted and encouraged. Boats and canoes are available at nominal charges and the several parts of the canal are stocked with trout, catfish, perch and pickerel all year round. Several trails are also available for jogging, walking and biking. Many of these pass through wondrous scenery and are quite close to the canal. Picnicking areas are available, but informal picnicking along the canal is also allowed.
The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park is a wonderful area for backpacking throughout the day, as it provides a ton of activities and a lot of historical sights.
