History

Founded in 1766 by Peter Hasenclever, a German engineer who specialized in ironworks, the Long Pond foundry served as the center of industry in the region until the late 1800s. Today, many structures from the ironworks and surrounding town are open to the public, who can enjoy a number of tours conducted by the Friends of Long Pond Ironworks foundation. Original furnaces, waterwheels, homes and other remnants are on view; an onsite museum displays additional photographs and information.

Long Pond Ironworks State Park is full of natural resources for outdoor exercise and entertainment. Boating, canoeing and fishing are popular choices in the Monksville Reservoir, which is packed with muskellunge, walleye and other sport fishes.
