In 1777 the peaceful winter woods of Princeton Battlefield State Park were transformed into one of the fiercest fights of the Revolutionary War. Located just a mile and a half south of Princeton University in New Jersey, this park offers many activities.

History

On January 3, 1777 American troops fought a desperate battle against the British on the Princeton Battlefield. Led by General George Washington, these soldiers successfully carried out a surprise attack on the British, giving the Americans their first victory and helping to turn the tide of the war.

Things to do

Princeton Battlefield State Park offers activities for visitors of all ages. Take a stroll on one of many trails that wind through 588 acres of mixed hardwood forests and wetlands. Most trails feature a mild grade, but some are nearly level. Visit the Clarke House, which contains period furniture and Revolutionary War exhibits. Make sure to stop by the famous Mercer Oak, the legendary tree that marks the spot where General Hugh Mercer fell during battle. There are no entrance fees for the park, and if you visit on the anniversary of the battle you can witness a realistic reenactment featuring period dress and authentic weapons of war.

Take a leisurely stroll through the woods of Princeton Battlefield State Park or visit its rich historical sites. Throughout the park, interpretive markers provide information about the battle and the events leading up to it. The park is open year-round, so anytime is perfect for a visit.
